Everyone is miked everywhere now. Artists are not given a choice in the matter and should not be punished for the decisions of theaters that are trying to cater to contemporary audiences who are used to blasting earbuds directly into their auditory canals. I have sung performances where the ORCHESTRA was miked, and the singers not miked enough, so it still sounded like bad balance. In my brief experience at a certain major theatre, the stalwart audience is sure that their favorites are not being miked, when in fact the place is such an acoustical black hole that foe example, singers floating beautiful pianissimi are completely inaudible unless they are cranked up. The only people this place didn't amplify were those who were apparently annoying the music staff, and debutantes. The latter seemed to be demonstrating what they had on offer, as even the spouse of a world famous singer,who was making his/her debut, got no help... they did fine anyway. I was not miked for the entirety of my first big scene and got to honk high notes over a world famous orchestra and chorus without apparent assistance. Only in my next scene when I elected not to use chest to project a certain low phrase did I hear the electronics kick on. I considered it a compliment! 😅

I would really like to know what scientific parameters define the "size" of a voice. Loudness? Sound pressure? Kind of perception/characteristic? We witness that Gigli has no problems to cope with Ruffo at least on tape in terms of being well heard.

The great Eileen Farrell was indeed a treasure. She once said, the problem was, she loved to sing! Thank God she had this problem! She was the greatest opera singer of the twentieth century. She could also properly and beautifully sing classic pop music.

Sono d'accordo Grandissimo, pur svantaggiato da tecniche imperfette di registrazione. Apprezzerei una comparativa tuttavia con altri Grandi Baritoni, per non lasciarlo "solo", Bastiannini, Granforte, Merrill, Stracciari, insomma "vecchia" e "nuova scuola" per i grandi "il Balen" fa bene all'arte quando è grande e diversa .

Ma aveva bevuto qui, Serafin?
